The River Why

riverruns

I'm not going to lie, I'll watch this movie whenever it's re-run on TBS. I like it, and I probibly like Brad Pitt a little too much. But that's not the point of this rant, so I'll move on.

Nothing gets the blood boiling more than rounding the bend, and finding some orvis decked out douchebag standing waist deep in the hole you walked 3 miles to fish (although good on him for walking farther than most douchebags). That's the feeling alot of fly guys get when you mention "A River Runs Through It". I didn't pick up the fly rod until a few years after "The Movie", so I didn't feel the asshat tsunami that apparently hit every trout stream in America. That was nearly 16 years ago. I Took up the sport about 10 years ago, and am by no means an old timer, or professional, but can vouche for the increase in fly-guy numbers in that short time period.

So, what's the next big butt bump for the sport? The movie adaptaion of the David James Duncan book, The River Why.

I haven't read it, and I probibly won't. Comparing a book to a movie is retarded anyway. Here's how it's described on the films website though.

"Set on the banks of a wild river, 'The River Why' is the story of 20 year old Gus Orviston, the Mozart of flyfishing, who leaves his big city home in rebellion from his family. In the process he comes in contact with an assortment of eccentric characters who help him in his journey to adulthood. Most of all, The River Why is a love story. The love of a man for the wilderness, and for a beautiful woman who comes to share it with him."

OK. Where to start? Gus Orviston, really? Unless he really is the chap who started Orvis, he's gonna be cleaning alot of shitters to gain the respect of any real fishermen. Unless, of course, his friends are Patty Gonia, Winston Sage, and Scott Sims.

Secondly, is the big city really the place to breed "the Mozart of flyfishing"? Can he pick pocket a money clip from 50ft with his 4wt? Double haul across central park, and land his fly in a commuter's Starbucks mug? Being from the city myself, I can almost empathize. Except for the part about magically becoming a fly fishing savant, driven to ramble around the country ala Alexander Supertramp.

So, this movie obviously doesn't have much going for it to please actual fly fishermen. Though it will feature tastey-biscuit Amber Heard (as a girl named Eddy), who's been in a number of films and shows you'll never care about.

Take another look at her, as it's likely she'll be the only part of the movie worth watching. I suspect the movie will have little to do with fly fishing, and more to do with personal growth, love, and hippies. That didn't stop "A River Runs Through It" though from herding legions of mystified businessmen into the corrals of L.L. Bean and Orvis.

So, hopefully this film will be a terrible flop, and only inspire 40 year old single women to rent it on late lonely nights. But, if it actually does stir up the interest of another middle aged generation of gear hungry hackers, at least the manufacturers who make our equipment will benefit. We certainly wouldn't have the amount of quality fly fishing equipment today if "The Movie" had never been made.
